History of International Mother Language Day
The history of International Mother Language Day is very ancient. This day started in 1947. After the partition of the country in 1947, the Urdu-speaking people used to inflict various injustices on the Bengalis. In 1952, Bengali students became angry when they demand that Urdu be made the state language. They demanded to make Bengali the state language.
Disregarding this demand, the students marched in violation of section 144 on 21st February. Police opened fire on the procession. Many students died in it. When the Bengalis wanted to build an altar at their place of death, they also demolished it. In turn, UNESCO declares this day as International Mother Language Day.
